Hockey Boss Mini Mites Cross Ice
The Benefits of Cross-Ice Hockey
Pre-Requisite: Learn to Play – Level Four or Evaluation by Aspen Ice Skating Professional
With so little access to possessing the puck, spending less time on the ice between shifting positions, and having difficulty reaching the goal, full ice play doesn’t work for the kids. When under 8 players play cross ice hockey, they spend a lot more time playing and handling the puck. Because the game moves much faster in the smaller ice, the players learn to make quick decisions. Cross-ice hockey isn’t just different from traditional hockey because of the size of the playing area. The games are played with or without a goalie and have a much smaller net. Because there can be 3 games going at the same time, 36 players can be on the ice at the same time playing, meaning fewer kids sitting out. This method allows kids to play against different people, helping them learn more defensive and offensive techniques. The small goal helps players develop shooting techniques and precision.

Our Hockey Programs – Where to Start?
Learn to Skate - Hockey 1
Hockey Learn to Skate, which takes place during our Saturday & Sunday Learn to Skate sessions, is the place to start for beginner hockey players of all ages. Skaters will develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice in hockey skates. Once successfully completing Hockey 1, skaters will be evaluated and placed in Hockey Boss Learn to Play or above, based on a coaches recommendation. Click Here to visit the page for Hockey 1.
Learn to Play Hockey
Hockey Boss Learn to Play will be geared towards beginner hockey players ages 4 to 18 who have passed Basic Skills Hockey 1 or have been evaluated into the program. This program is appropriate for the first time hockey player looking to enter cross ice or recreational hockey programs in the fall; once completed skaters will be evaluated into either cross ice or a league (based on age). Players will focus on hockey skating skills and be introduced to basic stick handling and skating drills. Full gear is required (Hockey Boss Equipment Package). Students will be group by age and/or skill level. Players must have completed hockey one or have been evaluated by a coach before being accepted into the program. All players must have basic skating ability in hockey skates. Click Here to view the Learn to Play page.
Hockey Boss Cross Ice (Ages 5 to 8)
Cross Ice Developmental Hockey is designed for skaters ages 5 to 8 who have successfully completed our Hockey Boss Learn to Play Program (See Above). If skaters have not completed either of the above programs, private instructor approval must be provided upon registration. During all cross ice sessions, the ice will divided into three cross ice sections and children will be grouped by age. In each section, players will participate in instructional cross ice scrimmages, emphasizing on understanding the game of hockey and having fun. Click Here to visit that page!
Middle School League
For players going into 6th, 7th or 8th grades, who have successfully completed either HockeyBoss Intro to Hockey or HockeyBoss Cross Ice, Aspen Ice is forming a 2015 Spring Middle School Hockey League. In addition to the Aspen Ice team, there are various towns that make up their own middle school hockey leagues. The primary goal is to provide players with a chance to play in a competitive league that will prepare them for skating on the high school level and skate with the kids they live and go to school with.
Squirt Hockey League
For players with birth years ’05 and ’06 (’07 with league approval), who have successfully completed Hockey Boss Learn to Play or Hockey Boss Cross Ice, Aspen Ice is forming a Squirt Hockey League. Each team will play 12 game season plus playoffs and will play at the 2015-16 level of play.
